Leave that raggedy old witch hat at home and party with real witches this Halloween.

There will be plenty of pagans at Moonlight Masquerade at the Magnolia Room in Overton Square on Saturday, October 30th. The annual witches’ ball has been a local pagan tradition for 30 years, but this is the first year the event will be hosted by the Temple of the Sacred Gift, a nonprofit Wiccan church in Memphis. The event is open to everyone, regardless of spiritual belief.

“We wanted to host something that all faiths could go to, where we could mix and mingle and show just how normal we are,” said the Rev. Sonya Hill-Miller of Temple of the Sacred Gift.

Costumes and masks are encouraged, and DJs Tempest and Owlctupus will provide the music. There also will be a catered dinner and a cash bar. Tickets are $30 and are available at Tater Red’s Lucky Mojo Shop, Ebbo Spiritual Supply House, and at the event’s website. But don’t wait. Ticket sales end Sunday, October 24th.

Started in 1990 by Memphis pagan pioneer Pat Tobias, the ball opened to the public a few years back. Tobias handed organization of the ball over to the Temple of the Sacred Gift this year.

Tobias said she hopes the event will “put aside the mess that [paganism] is darkness, because it isn’t. This is a way to reach out and explain that we’re not bad people.” — Bianca Phillips
