Re: “The Nature of Elephants

After visiting the Natural Bridge Zoo in Virginia when doing a protest/demo there last Saturday, I am heartsick about the conditions the lone elephant ASHA has to endure. She has all of 1 1/2 acres of fenced land when she is NOT working which means being confined to a very small ring-like enclosure, standing for hours in one place waiting for people to take rides on her. It was 92 degrees that day, she was not allowed water, and the zoo owner proudly said that she only urinates on command, which is then at another part of the grounds.
I know from research that standing for long periods of time (one rider within an hour which meant she could walk around the very small ring once) is very detrimental to elephants' feet because of their weight, for one.
The owner made the ridiculous comparison that she is like 'your cats and dogs, enjoys seeing us....' I reminded him that pets have been domesticated for thousands of years, NOT SO wild animals like elephants. She was a baby when she was captured as her parents were killed in Africa. Soo sad.
There were 8 of us helping with the National Day of Free the Zoo Elephants, sponsored by IDA.
Needless to say, ALL the animals were in cages much too small and inadequately furbished for their needs.

This zoo needs to be shut down!
