Neighborhood Texture Jam at Young Avenue Deli

Neighborhood Texture Jam and Pezz together? Now that's an old-school punk show.

NTJ was founded in 1988 at Rhodes College and quickly gained a reputation for playing ferocious, funk-informed punk rock shot through with whimsy and in-your-face political comment. The group also developed a reputation for putting on theatrical shows and playing unusual instruments like weed eaters, circular saws, and dangerous objects of all kinds.

It's been a long time since all the members of NTJ lived in Memphis, but at least once a year, Joe Lapsley, the bearded, often shirtless, and sometimes bone-wielding history professor who fronts the group, makes his way down I-55 from Chicago to join guitarists John Whittemore and Tee Cloar, bassist Steve Conn, drummer Paul Buchignani, and texture artist Greg Easterly to perform songs about fast food, Rush Limbaugh, and Borax factories and ensure that the chord- and glass-crunching can continue.

Memphis punk institution Pezz was formed by Marvin Stockwell and Ceylon Mooney in 1989 and quickly became mainstays of the Antenna club's hardcore scene. Although numerous bass players have come and gone (including Scott Bomar of the Bo-Keys and both Brian Venable and Ben Nichols of Lucero), the band has never stopped churning out smart punk that's as aggressive as it is melodic.

Neighborhood Texture Jam and Pezz play the Young Avenue Deli on Saturday, August 10th.
