Now Hear This

Who wants to see some live audio theater? Yes, there may seem to be some disagreement between the verb and the object, but sometimes Chatterbox Audio Theater likes to tell stories in front of an audience to show off the nifty little secrets behind their sound effects. And that's exactly what they'll be doing at Germantown Community Theatre this week when the group performs and records Sonic Environment, a collection of stories created by students from East High School, Millington Central High School, and Houston High School.

Chatterbox is one of Memphis' newest and most ambitious arts groups. Formed in 2007 by a handful of Rhodes College alums with a shared desire to make purely "mental" theater, the group has already adapted dozens of short stories, posted 25 episodes to their website, chatterboxtheater.org, and attracted a catalogue of actors that reads like a who's who of local talent. Most recently, the group teamed up with WKNO radio for an evening of horror and suspense that was broadcast live on Halloween night.

Sonic Environment is the result of a collaboration with Bo List, GCT's executive director, and Julia Hinson, GCT's director of education and outreach, who compiled the script after five weeks of writing and performance workshops with students.

"The show is by turns funny, serious, silly, introspective, political, and just plain weird," says Chatterbox executive director Bob Arnold. "I think there's huge educational potential within Chatterbox, and this is just the first hint of it."

"Sonic Environment," Thursday, February 12th, through Sunday, February 15th, at Germantown Community Theatre. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. except the Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
