OLD SKOOL VS. NEW SKOOL

OLD SKOOL VS. NEW SKOOL

OLD SKOOL VS. NEW SKOOL The following is a bit of local news from the year 1881. It was recently printed in Memphis history zine Old Shelby County: A called meeting of the school board was held at their rooms in Odd Fellows Hall last night, eleven members being present and nine absent. The consideration of a report of the ways and means committee was the object of the meeting. The report disclosed that every effort to borrow money to pay teachers has been exhausted. Ten members voted in favor of closing the schools on the first of March and one voted against the measure. The indebtedness of the board is about sufficient to consume all incoming taxes that can be collected between this and next fall. Absenteeism and incompetent spending among public officials? No money for schools? Band-Aid solutions for severed-head-sized problems? Sigh... so much for the myth that things can only get better.
