On With the Show

Rejoice, America. It's Oscar Night. This Sunday will be the best night of television all year, with the Academy Awards broadcast. Watching it on TV is as close as most of us (not talking to you, Craig Brewer) will ever get to the actual ceremony.

But for 11 years now, Oscar Night America has brought Mid-Southerners closer to all that glitz and luster of Hollywood's biggest night. This year's Oscar Night America will be held at Minglewood Hall and is one of 49 parties in the U.S. that's officially sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the group that puts "Academy" in "Academy Awards."

Will The Artist beat out The Help for Best Picture? Will George Clooney or Jean Dujardin emerge victorious as Hollywood's best leading man this year? And will either of the locally connected documentaries, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory or Undefeated, take home Oscar gold?

Oscar Night America attendees will receive the same official program that Brad Pitt and Viola Davis and even Max von Sydow will be getting at the ceremony in Los Angeles. The pre-Oscar celebration in Memphis is sponsored by Laurelwood Shopping Center and will feature a red-carpet walk, live and silent auctions, and music.

The event benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis. Tickets cost $125 each, and tables of 10 can be reserved for $1,250. Purchase them at Ronald McDonald House of Memphis at 535 Alabama Avenue or visit rmhc-memphis.org.

The Flyer's film editor, Chris Herrington, and I are making our Oscar predictions on memphisflyer.com all week. Check it out for the best advice to use for your own Oscar pools and contests. 'Tis the season, and it is a wonderful time of the year.

So, the only question is, who are you wearing for the Oscars this year?
