Re: “Andy Wise is Now on WMC-5's Side

Hello, I am writing to you in an effort to expose a very expensive "procedure" that has been going on at MLGW for a couple of months now. I can only tell you about my personal experience but the consequences of their ongoing "investigations" (that they are still pursuing) continue to cost people their jobs. MLGW has a "residency policy" that was voted in by the council and went into affect in February of 2005. Any employee hired in after this date must provide adequate documentation that they do indeed live in Memphis City limits. Although we serve the county, we are required to live in the city limits. My guess is to get the city and county taxes. When I was hired in on February 26th, 2007 I was given 6 months to move into Memphis city limits. I did this and I provided them all the documentation they required to prove this. However, as of approximately 2 months ago, the Human Resources department there began being audited. It was very obvious that they were "behind in times" and the employees in that department has had to work frantically because of the lack of technology, that in these days are common practice. This brings me to my point. As of Monday, March 9th I was officially terminated from my job for assumingly violating their Residency Policy. I have lived in Memphis for almost two years now. Because of their Human Resource's department recently being under an audit, that I admit would have to be stressful, they began an investigation of the employees hired after the residency policy went into place. This started with a much more formal letter that was issued (via-memo) which listed all the specific pieces of documentation needed in order to be in compliance. It was obvious that it was put together with much more attention this time because of the auditing process. This did not present me with a problem at all. I simply gave them all the documentation they asked for (all over again). This now brings me to my point of complaint. I and a vast number of employees have been terminated for violating their residency policy SOLELY based on one thing. They started sending out investigators to our residences to check if our vehicles were there or not "at a time when they should have been". I proved to them that two of the three nights they come to check my house in the middle of the night.........I was on vacation. Whenever I received my termination papers, it listed three more nights they checked my house......nights that they never brought up before which could have given me a further chance to explain where I may have been then. Another point is this, this IS NOT "in house arrest".......I have a girlfriend; I have a very sick mother back in Brownsville that I must give attention to. I had a letter sent from my Mother's doctor confirming this. I am 37 years old and I'm not married.....in other words I have a life!!!! I was never told I had a curfew. I live with a roommate and I am in and out ALL THE TIME. Also, I would like to fill you in on something else which proves a valid point when it comes to financial and employee management at MLGW. Not only did they set and stalk MY house for six nights on and off but they also made documented trips back to my homes town and staked my Mother's house. They pulled her license plate from her car confirming that the car did indeed belong to her. They went as far as to prove that the propane tank outside her house was actually being used. My car was not there so they then went as far as to scout my ex-wife's house. They pulled her license plates from her car confirming that the car belonged to her. Even further, they went and confirmed that my ex-wife's address did not match up to the actual house she is living in but rather to her parent's house because she (my ex-wife) is temporarily living in a house owned by her church. I have been divorced from my ex-wife for five years!!!! In my letter of termination, it explains that my car was nowhere to be found in Brownsville, TN. However, on the nights they checked my house in Memphis, it was not found there either. I have lost my job at MLGW after providing them with all the documentation they required.......but just for not being at home at the times they drove by to see if my car was there!!! Is this fair I ask? Also, I'm only telling you MY story and not all the others that were fired without even given a chance for an explanation. One point that I want to emphasize is this..............where does ALL those thousands and thousands of dollars come from to do that type of overly extensive investigating of that many employees. Now...think about this, what about all the Human Resource's time that is spent in "hearings" to listen to each one of these cases such as mine. What about all the time that our Union spends fighting such cases as these. What about all the time that will be spent in grievances that are guaranteed to drag on forever. What about all the gas they spend in these vehicles to travel from town to town to investigate relatives? My final point to you MLGW is this: you asked me for all the required documentation......and I provided you with everything you asked for..........documentation that I could NOT HAVE retrieved (in MY name) unless I had a proven residency in Memphis City Limits. I cannot help the fact that your department is being scrutinized for being so far back in the times that you still utilize a typewriter.......but what I will say is that you have violated me. You have violated a privacy act and you have stalked me and my family. My daughter frequently has friends over to spend the night and I don't think it looks very good for you to be setting outside the house watching for my vehicle!!!!! You have placed me in the unemployment line for no valid reason. You have brought an extreme amount of stress in my life along with my family.......for the simple fact that my car was not there when you thought it should have been. You have embarrassed my 16 yr. old son and my 13 yr. old daughter as well as myself. The least I can do for you is expose you for your VERY hideous and unprofessional practices.........and one last thing....I would like to ask the people of Memphis......consider the money they spent on just investigating me......now .....Multiply that many, many, many, times........and you tell ME......do you think that cost you get at the end of each month they call a "utility" bill is solely based on your UTILITY USAGE ALONE????? I think NOT!!!! This is EXTREME unwise spending being exposed from JUST ONE person's mouth!!!!! .......and by the way.....I am NOT done with this violation that has been done to my family and myself by a long shot. The law is the law!
