Rebirth of Soul Prince Tribute

When: Sat., July 11, 7 p.m. 2009
Phone: 246-7454
Price: $20 advance/$25 day of race

Michael Jackson may have been the King of Pop, but Prince is surely next in line for the throne.

Songs like “Purple Rain,” “1999,” and “Raspberry Beret” are arguably as iconic as any song from the Jackson catalog. And Prince’s androgynous style and bizarre habit of going from name to symbol back to name again have carved an unforgettable niche.

In the wake of the King of Pop’s death, Memphis Rebirth Entertainment will honor Prince with their third installment in the “Rebirth of Soul” concert series.

Veteran Beale Street soul man Preston Shannon will perform Prince’s best-known works from the Purple Rain era. R&B artist Karen Brown will tackle Prince’s early career. Up-and-coming neo-soul musician Thomas Anthony will perform some of his more recent work.

In addition, Jamond Bullock’s Prince artwork will be displayed at the show, and he’ll also create paintings during the performances. After the show, a DJ will spin more Prince songs for a post-concert dance party.

Corey Davis of Memphis Rebirth planned the Prince tribute long before Jackson’s death, but he says the musicians also will pay homage to Jackson with a few songs from his catalog.

“We’ll be doing a small tribute to Michael Jackson,” Davis says. “The musicians will perform a couple of his songs to honor him.” — Bianca Phillips
