News gathering and reporting needn't be too costly in this day and age. Independent journalist Michael Yon's reporting for Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere around the world is a good example of someone providing excellent international news gathering on a modest budget. All it really takes is a little travel money, a laptop, a digital camera, internet access, some knowledge and intelligence, and a willingnesst o roll up one's sleeves and work hard.
