Rock of Ages

If you're the sort of person who likes to go see bands and yell "FREE BIRD," there's good news. Lynyrd Skynyrd — a band that might actually fulfill that tired-assed musical request — plays the Memphis Botanic Garden Friday, August 31st. On the other hand, if you're the sort of person who would "do anything for love" (but not "THAT"), then you'll probably want to skip Skynyrd and go see Meat Loaf when he plays the same night at Tunica's Horseshoe Casino. On the third hand, the Five That Killed Elvis, one of Memphis' most popular club bands of the late 1980s and early '90s, are reuniting for a show at the Brass Door on Saturday. But those who prefer to rock for a good cause will want to consider an epic fourth option, the Ron-a-Thon, a weekend-long benefit concert at the Poplar Lounge for Angerhead drummer and skateboarding enthusiast Ron Hale.

Hale, who owns Cheapskates, Memphis' oldest continuously operating skateboard shop, has been a longtime supporter of Memphis' alternative, punk, and DIY scenes. When a recent trip to the ICU left Hale in a tight spot, the local music and comedy scenes offered too much support to be contained in a single evening. Friday's lineup includes music by Zydefaux, Paving Funk, Whatever Dude, and Memphis Killharmonic. Saturday's show features comedy by Jane Haze and music by Man Riot!, Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre, and others. On Sunday, it's comedy by Kate Lucas and Mike McCarthy, plus music by Clanky's Nub, Chris Scott, Peppermint Sun, and others. Festivities also include a silent auction and raffle.

Ron-a-Thon, at the Poplar Lounge, friday, August 31st, and saturday, September 1st, at 9 p.m., and Sunday, September 2nd, at 3 p.m. Suggested donation: $10 per day or $25 for all three days.
