Re: “Don't Blame Teachers, Unions, or Families

The problem no one wants to identify is the thug culture so prevalent among MCS students. There is a rampant anti intellectual anti-anything that looks white culture among MCS students. I have had any number of students come to me at the University and tell me that in order to succeed they have to pretend to be anti intellectual, to speak Black dialect and avoid speaking standard English because to do otherwise would get them shunned or beaten up or worse.

We have in MCS a whole segment of students who are vehemently racist and despise anything that sounds white especially anything that looks like the embrace of any intellectual effort that might get them success in white Corporate America. These students do not originate this attitude on their own, they buy it from their parents and their preachers and politicians.

Unless and until we recognize that there is a counter culture among some MSC students that honors failure and promotes failure as an attack on white values and success models, we will never find a way to make a blended Shelby County, Memphis City School system a success.
