Re: “Liquor Before Beer …

I always heard the adage as "liquor before beer, never fear; beer before whiskey, mighty risky". And doesn't it sound more pithy? More alliterative? Or even more southern?

I agree it's good advice not to drink on an empty stomach, especially with hard liquor. I find bread is usually available at a bar, so it's a good idea to eat a little to provide a buffer against rapid alcohol absorption (sure recipe for a hangover). And watch the alcohol content in your beer -- there's much more variation these days among brands, especially with craft beers. It started with those "ice" beers, that were about 5 percent alcohol (stronger than the normal 3.5 percent mainstream beers), but now you might order a craft beer that pushes 7 or even 9 percent. I drink beer mostly for the taste, but unfortunately my drinking arm only has one speed setting, so I must avoid the high-alcohol beers!

Re: “Up in Smoke

There is no easily-enforced standard for measuring the degree of intoxication of a THC-intoxicated driver (a blood test is invasive and requires a judge's approval, and even then THC level is not necessarily directly related to toxicity since it's fat-soluble and some are regular users). Measuring levels of THC/intoxication is important, since modern weed has a much higher variance of THC, unlike a generation ago when all of it was relatively weak. Until there's a simple, on-the-spot test for accurate testing of intoxication levels, I'm against making marijuana available for legal consumption. Driving in Memphis is already dangerous enough.

I am all for libertarian freedoms, but let's think this through before we make it legal -- public safety is paramount.

Re: “Midtown Beaver Alert!!!

A friend told me he he had beaver once, when he was staying down at the Y. I thought, why would they be serving beaver at the YMCA?

Re: “Gannett Stalls Severance Payments to Former Commercial Appeal Employees

Does Gannett legally have to honor all the terms of a union contract with the former owners of the CA?

As for severance, if Gannett fired these employees then certainly the employees are deserving of severance under terms of the contract with Gannett.

It could be worse -- Gannett could have made you play Hunger Games with H1B visa holders. Like the ones Disney made their fired employees train, in exchange for a little more severance pay.
