Scary Movies

Memphis filmmaker and reluctant preservationist Mike McCarthy has nothing but praise for Jimmy Tashie and Malco theaters. "It's so cool that they were able to afford to upgrade to digital projection at the Summer Drive-In," he says. "The inability to upgrade to digital is going to wipe out a lot of drive-ins. It's going to be devastating."

McCarthy is teaming with Malco, Professor Ghoul, and Black Lodge Video to simultaneously celebrate drive-in culture and Halloween with "Time Warp Drive-In," a "dusk to dawn horrorthon" featuring a slasher flick, a zombie massacre, some demonic possession, and, to mix it up, a bit of nudity-free sexploitation.

• The original Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Craven's reality-bending entry into the slasher category, introduced the character of Freddy Krueger who murders teenagers in their dreams. It was also Johnny Depp's introduction to the big screen.

The Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn is as much a reboot as it is a sequel. Sam Rami's gore-spattered slapstick features the incomparable Bruce Campbell as Ash, the affable S-Mart employee who battles demonic forces including, hilariously, his own possessed hand.

Return of the Living Dead: Dan O'Bannon's dark comedy introduced the idea that zombies prefer eating brains.

• Although Russ Meyer's Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! does feature some senseless killing, it's not exactly a horror feature. But drive-ins and exploitation films go hand-in-hand, and this story about busty go-go dancers on a rampage is a classic of the genre.

"If this is successful, we'll be back next season programming two Saturday nights a month," McCarthy says.

"Time Warp Drive-In" at the Malco Summer Drive-in will get under way sometime after sundown, Saturday, October 26th. The cost is $10 per person.
