Shake it Up

All Shook Up director Emily Chateau is excited that her play is an officially sanctioned Elvis Week event. "Maybe this will bring some people out to [the Harrell Performing Arts Center] who we might not have seen otherwise," she says. And All Shook Up should certainly have some appeal for Elvis fans. The frothy jukebox musical is built around some of the King's biggest hits with a book written by Joe DiPietro, who also authored the Tony-winning Broadway musical Memphis.

"The story parallels William Shakespeare's comedy Twelfth Night," Chateau says. "And it's really clever how all of the songs have been made to fit the story. The script is really campy, but we've tried to play it straight in order to punch up the humor. And then we've got lights and sets which are so over the top and let people know they shouldn't take this show too seriously."

Chateau, who recently received an Ostrander nomination for her giddy performance as Miss Adelaide in Germantown Community Theatre's scaled-back production of Guys and Dolls, moved to the Memphis area two years ago and instantly became a familiar face on local stages. This is her first foray into directing.

"I've directed children's theater in Michigan," Chateau says. "But this is the first time working with adults."

"All Shook Up" at the Harrell Performing Arts Center through August 15th. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens. The Thursday, August 12th, performance benefits the Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center. tickets for the benefit are $10 (457-2780).
