Re: “Guitar Great Calvin Newborn Passes Away Suddenly

Calvin was a dear friend and, as he always proclaimed, we were "musical soulmates". I had the extreme pleasure of singing with him 1999 - 2004, on numerous occasions in Memphis. After a farewell to Memphis performance at Huey's downtown in July 2004, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where he was so happy to be able to spend time with his daughter and her family. He returned to Memphis several times to receive awards and be honored for his great contribution as a world class jazz guitarist. He always called me "The Angel of Beale Street" as I met him at the King's Palace, on Beale, when he was part of Charlie Wood's jazz ensemble there. I wrote a song about him "Flying - An Ode To Calvin Newborn" and recorded it and brought it to him the following Saturday at King's Palace. We became the best of friends. So, "Mr. Real" in Jacksonville, you are now Mr. Real for sure and through your music you will be with us always.
