Still Checking

Soil-testing wells will be drilled near Memphis Depot Business Park.

Contaminants may still remain in the soil surrounding the Memphis Depot Business Park's Dunn Field, and this month five new groundwater monitoring wells will be placed on property adjacent to the area.

The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence will be drilling three wells on Memphis Light, Gas and Water property southeast of Menager Road, one near the intersection of Sparks Street and Dempster, and another in a field west of Rozelle Street.

The depot has been closed since 1997, and chemicals once buried there were cleaned up in 2000. But small amounts of chemicals and contaminants may remain in and around the property.

"We wouldn't recommend it for total recreational use, but it would certainly be safe to golf on. We don't encourage people to roll around on the grass," said Jackie Noble, public relations officer for the Defense Logistics Agency.

Data gathered from soil samples will assist in the design of a "permeable reactive barrier," an underground wall containing iron particles that break down chemicals in the groundwater. It turns them into safe compounds that degrade over time.

The main installation of the distribution center was turned over to the city last year and a 40-acre stretch of Dunn Field is ready to be turned over. The remaining 24 acres will not be completely cleaned up until 2007. n
