Re: “What is the Impact of Free Concerts?

The beautiful aspect of free and family friendly shows in the open air is it brings the community together to support local bands. The concert goers also donate to shell so they can continue to bring music to families who cannot afford to dish out $200.00 for one evening with the family. I volunteered at the Shell for many years, and although not popular back then, free shows have always been at the shell to raise money to keep it alive. Without the hard work of people like John Larkin, Scott & Amy Banbury, David, and the hundreds of musicians and volunteers over the past 19 years I have seen come and go who love the shell, it would not be here today. The renovations are amazing, and over those 19 years of painting benches, cutting grass, painting the rainbow, sweeping up, and protecting it, the type of crowds we see now is a dream come true. Free is good, and as long as the community donates, the shell shows will remain free for years to come.

Re: “City Asks for Skatepark Input

Mr. Awesomeberg - Dr. Aaron Schafer at Skatelife Memphis.org has all the stats you need regarding the popularity of skateboarding and its positive influence on the youth of Memphis and other large cities.

RE: "Build golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools, basketball courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, walking/running trails, playgrounds, but by Liberty, don't you dare build a skatepark. Liberty's at stake here folks."

Again, Golf courses? Really? I've never once heard a teenager say "Hey Mom, I would really love to play golf right now."

Fix the existing playgrounds first, and Memphis has plenty of walking/running trails, baesball fields, basketball courts, and soccer fields.

Memphis youth desperately need a place to skate without being harrassed by the police. The skateboarding community in Memphis is larger than you know. Bicyling is an adult sport for the most part, golf...(for teens?) and a dog park doesn't exactly mentor city school children to avoid joining a gang. Memphis City School budget cuts to extra-curricular activities and sports does not help the youth of our city either.

Veteran skateboarders in Memphis are constantly giving skateboards to teens and help coach children as young as seven to learn how to skateboard. It is terrific excercise and keeps children active.
