Now on display at Mona Lisa Gallery in Somerville is part one of the two-part series "Six Kinds of Liar" by Joel Hilgenberg and Garen Shrader. The show is an exploration of representation and fabrication via studies for paintings in part one and the completed, large-scale paintings in part two. "In part one, you're seeing the process we go through to do these bigger-scale pieces," Shrader says. "We're maybe taking it a little bit further and finishing these out to where they are like completed works."

The title of the exhibit is borrowed from a book by Sarah Burton called Imposters: Six Kinds of Liar. The two artists have collected a series of refined sketches for larger paintings, all of which call into question the role of lying in artistic representation. "One story told one time changes the next time it is told," Shrader says. "Is it a lie? Is it embellished?"

Both graduates of Memphis College of Art, Hilgenberg and Shrader have paralleled each other in the Memphis art world for some time now, but this is their first show together. Part one of "Six Kinds of Liar" will be up until August 31st. Part two will go up at a later date. Mona Lisa Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by appointment.

"Six Kinds of Liar," through August 31st at Mona Lisa Gallery, 16746 Hwy. 64, Somerville (482-0246)
