Re: “Residency Requirement Fee for Memphis Police Moving Forward

I think the $ 1,200.00 fee is outrageous and would only discourage people from accepting a job as a Memphis police officer. We need police officers!!! We need to be able to pay them decent too. It will be impossible to recruit for the Memphis Police Department if the non-residents have to pay a fee PLUS endure lower wages than some of the smaller suburban departments pay. I believe that there are more than enough qualified native Memphians to staff our police department. The police department needs to get serious about it's recruiting efforts. As an example, the Los Angeles Police department uses appealing, professionally produced television and radio spots as well as magazine, bill board and newspaper ads. Every Los Angeles officer is required to carry and use business cards that have the LAPD recruiting slogan and phone number on the bottom of the card. If we want to recruit more Memphians (or people in general) for our police department, we need to get serious about the issue and start running PROFESSIONALLY PRODUCED spots on local TV and radio stations and run a half page ad in the Commercial Appeal periodically. In addition to the college requirement being dropped, they should also relax the credit standards on the background check (its hard to find perfect people these days) and implement a NON-PAID pre-academy physical fitness, general education and other required skills preparation camp for interested candidates. There are enough qualified people in Memphis. They just need to be recruited and prepared to enter the academy and ultimately the department. Its the whole diamond in the rough concept.
