That's the Spirit

"I was led by the spirit," says photographer Jason Miccolo Johnson of his travels throughout America, and Soul Sanctuary: Images of the African American Worship Experience (Bulfinch Press) is the end-product: more than 150 black-and-white photographs that take you inside black churches across denominations and across the country. Johnson, a native Memphian now living in Washington, D.C., will be one of the featured participants at this year's Memphis Black Writers Conference & Southern Film Festival, held at The Peabody and various downtown locations April 21st-23rd.

But Johnson isn't the only one with the spirit. Sheila C. Carpenter, author of The Christian Walk: The Struggle To Remain on the Path, will be on hand too for the conference, which includes writing and filmmaking workshops, readings and booksignings, youth programs and panel discussions, networking sessions, and an awards ceremony. Many of the events are free. For information on the conference or to register, call conference director Lawrence Wayne at 392-0632 or go to www.angelfire.com/tn/blackwritersconf/ScheduleEvent.html.
