The Blotter

True stories from the local police files.

Real-Life Mean Girls? A woman on Meadow called police May 4th after a neighbor said he found a letter in his mailbox "stating bad things" about the woman. The same letter was found in about 30 other mailboxes in the area. The woman told police that "this is an ongoing problem, but [she] does not know who might be doing this."

Smoking is bad for ... furniture: On May 4th, a fire alarm sounded in a public-housing facility on Neely, and residents and staff saw smoke in the hall and determined it came from a specific apartment. Officers called to the scene entered the apartment to conduct a search for the possible fire and noticed the smoke was coming out of the sofa. They directed the resident to move away from the sofa. "Moving the pillow on the sofa, officer observed a large burn on the cushion under the pillows."

Lap dances never come cheap: Officers responded to a pocket-picking at a business on Lamar. A man told officers that he had been trying to get a dance from a woman when she asked him to buy her a beer. He did, and after he returned to his seat, the woman "sat on his lap for several minutes and he asked her to get up, because he had to go to the restroom. The victim advised that several girls were on his lap." His wallet was later found in the women's restroom.

If only informants could get it right: On May 6th, officers went to a car wash and saw a woman in a truck park in the last bay and get into a gray Buick. As officers approached the car, the woman threw a clear plastic bag of what they assumed to be crack cocaine out the window, but it was actually seven grams of a substance that has the same color, shape, size, and physical appearance of crack.
