The Coathangers and Modern Convenience

When: Mon., Oct. 12, 9 p.m. 2009
Scramble, the second album from four-piece Atlanta art-punk band the Coathangers, is angular, ragged, and screechy, in the tradition of classic femme-led punk bands like the Raincoats and Kleenex, albeit with a little more American garage-rock thrown into the mix. The wobbly lo-fi quality requires a bit of commitment, but once you make it through, rewards are plenty, from the declamatory “Gettin’ Mad and Pumpin’ Iron” and anti-noisy-neighbor diatribe “Stop Stomp Stompin’” (“I hear you walking up the stairs/I think you have a love affair … with stompin’”) to the swoony girl-group-referencing “Dreamboat.” And when they get noisy, they usually make something of it. The Coathangers play the Hi-Tone Café Monday, October 12th, with Modern Convenience. Showtime is 10 p.m. Admission is $7. — Chris Herrington
