Re: “Strickland Sets Sights on Crime, Poverty

I am going to throw in my two cents worth and truth is.... It may not even be worth two cents. OH HELL! I will give to you all for FREE! LOL.
I came from a small town in MS. I moved to Memphis for a job Teaching in hopes of better pay and benefits. Well, for awhile it worked out just fine. Got married, had kids, husband switched from Jail division to MPD, then BOOM! Yep, just like that. Husband is shot and killed. Now, I am left raising two kids alone, in a city with a high crime rate. Can I leave? No! Why? Because of a benefit to Survivors that gives children free education, including college. So, I am stuck here. Now, I will not and do not hold that against the state of TN nor do I hold it against Memphis. That would be unproductive and very childish. So, I do what I can to help others feel needed and appreciated, as well as speak out for those who have NO VOICE. You may think I am "whining", however, you must understand that I get NOTHING out of all of the publicity I do. It comes out of my pocket and the kids' pockets. We don't get paid, we don't get raises, we don't get holiday checks, we don't get social security for me or the kids at all. We get nothing but the pension, which isn't much.
Now, these Officers and Fire were promised something when they signed. Now, the City Council turns around and takes. You guys who have commented earlier, who are in the private sector were promised things and certain salaries when you were hired for your job. I am certain that if your boss came in and said, I am cutting your salary and time off, plus I am going to make it harder for you to do your job. Would you have a say? Would you fight for what you agreed upon in the beginning, or would you start looking for another job elsewhere? It is entirely in your ballpark. Now, either you have to decide whether to "ride the storm" and stick it out (by adapting and finding a way to cut your bills or give up some things so that you have money to even pay your bills) or you look for the HIGH ROAD and start searching jobs elsewhere.
Now imagine your boss decides that he is suddenly going to have a "change of heart" and is going to give employees a raise. LOL. Only your boss decides that the TOP 20 Officials in charge will get that raise. WAIT! He cut your salary to give it to someone else! YEP. So, how do you like them apples, huh? So, your co-workers decide that they can't stay and continue because it would be detrimental to their families. Many leave. You don't fault them, however, you are left with having to handle not only your job, but some of theirs as well. Now you have twice the load you had originally and yet you aren't getting relief. So, the boss man comes and decides to "hire" new people. Only, when they get through training them, they send them to you for you to watch them and "guide" them all while doing your job. These "new hires" do not yet understand all that there is involved and make a lot of mistakes, but that all falls back on you and you have to clean it all up, plus do your job, keeping up the same output, as you would have before all of this started. Now, how do you feel? Stressed? You want to feel relieved that the new hires are there to help, however, you end up doing their job over in the end or redoing over half of their paperwork because of mistakes.
So, feeling the pressure now? No time to see your family. No time for seeing your kids perform on stage or birthday parties to attend. No time for your wife, or parents. They are just voices you hear on the phone, while you are at work, either in your own mind, or physically still there. It won't take long before divorce is mentioned because you are NEVER there. So, do you give up your job, or stay and fight for what is rightfully yours? what is best for you? What is best for your family? Well, you see... things aren't always as they seem. Life isn't peachy for me either. I love my kids. I LOVED TIM. I can't get TIM back. Nothing MPD does nor the CITY of MEMPHIS could ever do will bring TIM back. But you know what? It doesn't matter. The fight for what is rightfully theirs is still valid fight and I will STAND BEHIND and BESIDE those fighting for their rights. I get NOTHING out of it. I want nothing. I just want the citizens to simply put themselves in a FIRST RESPONDERS shoes and walk for a week to see what each of these Responders go through. Then, they can tell me to go to hell, if they still disagree. That is all. I hope none of the above offends anyone, although I simply do not care whether it does or doesn't. That is entirely on you and your own interpretation. I was once asked why I didn't run for a City Council position. My response is quite true and still rather comical; "Bartlett, TN doesn't need my help. They are doing JUST FINE as a city. The Mayor is doing well, and the City Council seems to KNOW right from wrong. There is NOTHING I could to do make it any better. They already have my undying support." Well, there you have it... in a nutshell... that is. hope it clears things up... even just a little. Take care everyone, Be Safe and GOD BLESS you all! Betsy Warren
