To Do To-Do

Dreamers, schemers, hobbyists, artists, obsessive DIY-ers: Grab your to-do list and sharpen your pencils. We've got some events for you.

First up is the Event Planning 101 workshop at Newby's on Thursday, a co-production of sorts between the University of Memphis Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Brister Street Productions, spearheaded by Brister Street's Jack Simon. The workshop has been designed as a group activity with participants creating an event together. Topics covered include legal considerations, logistics, and funding.

Simon is something of an event-planning newbie himself, just three years in but with some 30 events under his belt, including the popular Brister Street Festival. Asked what he would like to have known three years ago, he says, "Oh my God! How much time it takes."

So it's the first year for Saturday's How-To Festival at the Germantown Community Library, but organizers figured out that the quiet arts should be away from the loud ones, that they should put the dulcimer players across the room from the guitar player. (Unfortunately, the guitar guy can't make it, after all.) There will be some 30 presenters (small businesses, individuals, and community groups) offering tips in a multitude of arts — knitting, calligraphy, woodcarving, cake decorating, hula-hooping, and so on. Some of the booths offer demos, while others are more hands-on.

Finally, it's Broad Avenue Demo Days on Saturday, where 10 artists studios will be opening their doors for guests to get a peek at the inner workings. Among that being demo'ed: comics drawing, plastercasting, mural painting, and more. For those who like to get in on the action, there's the glassblowing at Five in One (bring your own glass!) and the grand opening of the Indie Style Market, a retail shop that will also offer DIY classes.
