Ty Segall, The Moonhearts, and Magic Kids

When: Thu., July 2, 9 p.m. 2009
San Francisco psych-garage hopeful Ty Seagall doesn't just look and sound a little like Memphis' Jay Reatard, he also boasts a similar one-man-band background that has morphed into his place as a frontman of a three-piece live band. Segall's second album, Lemons, marks him as the latest discovery for Memphis' Goner Records, and the album finds Segall impressively roughing up Sixties-style garage rock with reverb-drenched guitar and a heavy beat. There are limits to the Reatard comparison, with Lemons lacking both the intensity or burgeoning melodicism of Reatard's work. Seagall is clearly a talent, though, with the musicality to make this type of music interesting even in instrumental form ("Untitled #2"). Segall hits Memphis Thursday, July 2nd, and will play the Hi-Tone Cafe with the Moonhearts and Magic Kids. Doors open at 9pm, and admission is $7.
