Re: “Booksigning by Kenneth Whalum Jr.

The sad state of Memphis City Schools is a painful reminder of what happens when an entire generation is demonized and marginalized. This book delves thoughtfully into the problem, and offers solutions which will lift not only our system of public education, but the economic well-being of our community.

Yes, and its intentional vagueness is an affront to people with common sense.

Re: “The Mountaintop

Yes, I was there, and I've been telling everyone that every elected official in Memphis should see it. "Hurt Village" conveys the poignant reality of who we are as a city. "Hurt Village" is a clarion call explaining why we shouldn't surrender school systems, or tear down Foote Homes, or spend hundreds of millions of dollars courting out- of-state corporations rather than using it to correct the trajectory of thousands of poor children.

Re: “School Merger: Too Many Cooks and Nobody "Chopped"

BTW, JB, You are absolutely correct. There is no guarantee that the TPC will develop a plan that will meet statutory or judicial muster. I - for one - will not vote for a plan that doesn't. As I have told TPC Chairwoman Barbara Prescott, I would go to Nashville with her to ask for more time for the TPC to come up with their plan. Also, I think they should ask the legislature to FAST-TRACK municipal school districts so that the TPC will know what they're working with. So far, the TPC is focusing on the WHAT and not the HOW. Finally, did you notice that Prescott and Boyd came close to calling Senator Norris a liar?

Re: “School Merger: Too Many Cooks and Nobody "Chopped"

We HAVE a Patton, JB. His name is Kenneth Whalum, Jr. I've been asking for the Special Master for months. Judge Mays said we didn't need one because there were no conflicts that required one. It's a JOKE. Maybe the TEACHERS and PARENTS will finally assert THEIR authority at my COUNTYWIDE Town Hall Meeting Tuesday May 1st at 3084 Southern Avenue. The purpose of the meeting is for me to receive "next step" instructions from our constituents on just what they want to see the 23-member school board do during this "transition" period.
