Women, Manchild, Young Buffalo

When: Thu., Oct. 14, 10 p.m. 2010
Women, it turns out, are a bunch of men. An art-rock group from Calgary, they reach for timeless models from both the ’60s and the ’90s, resulting in something like a Beach Boys/Sonic Youth collaboration: empty and droning at base, with rich, melodic undertones emerging, then subsiding. The cohesive texture at which both models excel is preserved here but toned down considerably. It’s as if the members of Women murmur harmoniously, creating something communal in the midst of bleak surroundings. Rather than evoking smooth, belabored rock or a more haphazard, homemade sound, Women’s music elevates the lazy afternoon strumming and absentminded singing of a group of old, familiar friends — loafing, but serious — to the stage. Women play at the Hi-Tone Café Thursday, October 14th, with Manchild and Young Buffalo. Showtime is 10 p.m. Admission is $10. — Halley Johnson
