+ NEWS REPORTER, MEMPHIS FLYER

The Memphis Flyer is a locally owned and operated alternative newsweekly now in its fourth decade of asking questions, sharing stories, and keeping our community informed. The Flyer seeks a curious and focused journalist who aims to make Memphis a better place. The reporter will conduct research, interview sources, and write engaging stories to inform, captivate, and grow our audience in the Flyer’s weekly print publication and on its daily website. The
successful candidate is self-motivated, a clear communicator, and dedicated to producing high quality, original local journalism.

Skills:

  • Staying up-to-date on current events in Memphis to predict and cover rising news stories
  • Collecting, verifying, and analyzing newsworthy information through strong digital searches and a basic understanding of public records
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to convey clear, concise information to the Flyer readership
  • Keeping an open mind to tell stories you won’t find in other Memphis media
  • Understanding of basic AP Style and the ability to adapt to the Memphis Flyer style guide
  • Interacting professionally, building a network of sources within the community, and conducting thoughtful, direct interviews
  • Shooting digital photos and videos on a smartphone

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meeting weekly and daily story deadlines
  • Evaluating leads
  • Pitching story ideas to editors
  • Revising and editing work for editorial approval
  • Collaborating with other reporters, editors, and production staff
  • Taking photographs and recording video and audio
  • Analyzing facts and information to determine the most effective way to tell a story
  • Abiding by journalistic ethics

Requirements:

  • A creative and inquiring mind
  • The ability to gather, write, and edit news
  • Knowledge of current affairs in Memphis and of the Memphis media landscape
  • Computer proficiency (word processing, web search, database search, photo and file management)
  • Excellent communication and active listening skills
    Integrity, morality, and grit
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 1-2 years relevant experience

+ ACCOUNTING AND CIRCULATION ASSISTANT 

Contemporary Media Inc., locally owned and operated publisher of Memphis magazine, the Memphis Flyer, and Memphis Parent, is looking for a full-time accounting assistant to join our team. Candidate must be highly organized and able to thrive in a high volume, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. 

Job duties:

  • Manage Accounts Receivable for multiple publications, will include, but not limited to weekly and monthly invoicing, payment reminders, and collection calls. Maintain special billing requests per client and process payment plans as approved by Controller.
  • Process mail and deposit checks into accounting software. Reconcile credit card batches daily.
  • Maintain support documentation and proper filing. 
  • Quarterly audit reporting for multiple publications.
  • Monitor accounting email and phone line for call-ins and customer support.
  • Enter subscription orders into circulation software and proper filing.
  • Manage monthly renewals for subscribers to Memphis magazine.
  • Upload digital files for each publication. 
  • Accounts Payable support as needed. Assist with distribution management and processing  payments.
  • Think and pivot quickly as needed with sensitive information when discussing with customers.
  • Additional duties or changes to these described here may change and are at the discretion of the Controller.
  • Reports to Controller.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, must be able to make collection calls and send reminder emails.
  • Detail-oriented and an eye for discrepancies.
  • Experience with Quickbooks Online.
  • Experience in customer service.

+ SENIOR MULTIMEDIA EXECUTIVE
Contemporary Media Inc., locally owned and operated publisher of Memphis magazine, the Memphis Flyer, and Memphis Parent, is looking for a full-time, motivated salesperson to join our team.
Must have proven sales experience, excellent communication skills (both written and oral), and be a self-starter. Candidate must be highly organized and able to thrive in a high volume, fast-paced, and team-oriented environment. Passion for local media is a must. Knowledge of the Memphis market is a plus.This is a strong opportunity, with ample growth potential, for a personable self-starter. An account list will be provided, but a high level of prospecting for new business is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Print, digital, and event sponsorship selling experience
  • High-level cold-calling capabilities
  • Negotiation skills
  • High competency in MS Office and/or Google Drive products
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a large group
