According to June West, executive director of Memphis Heritage, the
Adapt-a-Door event came about for two reasons. First, she always had
liked Works of Heart, the annual Child Advocacy Center fund-raiser,
which centers around an auction of original heart-shaped pieces of art.
Second, Memphis Heritage had lots and lots of surplus doors.
Last spring, Memphis Heritage issued an invitation for interested
parties to take a door and rework it for the Adapt-a-Door auction on
August 22nd. West thought 20 doors might be taken, but she
underestimated. More than 90 doors were picked up, and the auction
Saturday will include roughly 50 pieces. One door, which came from an
old downtown Piggly Wiggly, has been repurposed as a room
divider/screen/coat rack by the team Vintage House Brand. Team TRO cut
their door into sections and made a lamp (and they blogged about it:
stack-project.blogspot.com).
Furniture-maker Will McGown created a desk, while Brandon Davis made a
rocking chair. Opening bids for all pieces start at $100.
At Saturday’s event, a prelude to the October 10th Architecture
Auction, guests can vote in the “Best of Door” contest. Tickets are
$15.
“We’re so pleased how the community got creative and really embraced
the event,” West says. “A door’s a pretty big thing to work with.”
