The Athens, Georgia-based trio the Whigs are a straightforward rock band reminiscent of such no-frills earlier indie/alt faves as the Replacements and the Archers of Loaf (even, in small ways, Nirvana). This is beery, catchy rock music from an unpretentious T-shirt-and-jeans crew that might make you feel as if you’ve been transported to a 1993 basement party. The band played Memphis last summer, opening for the Hold Steady, with Memphis-bred founding bassist Hank Sullivant rejoining them for the night. The Whigs return as a headliner this week, playing the Hi-Tone Cafรฉ on Monday, April 25th, with Company of Thieves and Young Buffalo. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $13. โ€” Chris Herrington
