According Anna Harris of Urban Workspace, the owner Kier Thomas had wanted the facility to host classes. The shared kitchen sparked an idea.
Harris has worked as a personal trainer, and while helping clients with their meal plans, something kept coming up. "A lot of them didn't know how to cook," she says.
And, so with this space and with her background in mind, Harris has put together a series of classes with a healthy angle.
Many of the classes, Harris will be teaching. There's one on gluten-free baking, and another on fall soups. She'll also lead a class called "Sweet Creations" that will include recipes for brownies and cupcakes that use alternatives for refined sugar, such as bananas.
Harris has also recruited chefs to help with the endeavor. Michael Patrick of Rizzos has been a personal training client of Harris'. Among his classes: "Just Men - Rustic Italian Dinners" and "Supergrains."
Ryan Spruhan of Chez Philippe will also be teaching. His classes include "Dinner a la mode" and "Autumn Delight."
Another recruit is Justin Fox Burks, of The Chubby Vegetarian (and Flyer contributor). He'll lead a class on vegetarian cooking for Thanksgiving.
The classes will be small, with a max of 8 students, all working on recipes together. Each class costs $49, and they will be held on weeknights and during the weekend.
On Thursday, October 4th at 6 p.m., Urban Workspace will hold an open house to introduce the classes. There will be food for sampling, and the chefs will on hand for a meet-and-greet.
Harris sees the classes as part of a bigger, healthier picture for the city. "Think of the possibilities for Memphis," she says.
