State Senator Paul Stanley, Blackmail Victim or Self-Victimizer?

Posted by Jackson Baker on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 9:33 PM

db19/1248230121-paul_stanley.jpgThe details thus far are sketchy, but two things stand out about the saga of state Senator Paul Stanley and his 22-year-old former legislative intern, McKensie Morrison: (1) The two of them seem to have had some sort of sexual relationship; and (2) explicit photographs of Morrison, apparently taken in Stanley’s Nashville apartment, were used in an attempt to blackmail the Germantown legislator.

The story apparently first surfaced Tuesday in a Nashville TV station’s report on an arrest affidavit charging Morrison’s boyfriend, 28-year-old Joel Palmer Watts, with an attempt last April to extort $10,000 from Stanley, married with two children, in return for the photographs. At that point, Stanley contacted the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Watts’ arrest followed.

What makes this story different from several others the public has grown familiar with is not necessarily that Stanley, as a legislator, has been identified with a number of family values issues — introducing a bill while a House member that prohibited the showing of pornographic materials in a moving vehicle and taking a prominent role this past session in opposing legislation enabling adoption by gay parents.

After all, Mark Sanford, the errant governor of South Carolina, idol of the Moral Majority, and onetime presidential prospect, was just recently exposed as a philanderer (and a long-distance one at that), and former Congressman Mark Foley, another righteous solon, was discovered to have hit on male pages, and no one has forgotten — or will ever forget — Senator Larry Craig’s wide bathroom stance or, for that matter, the Oval office escapades of Bill Clinton, a former president (who, however, was not especially prone to wearing moralistic causes on his sleeve).

While all of the above left traces of their indiscretions, ranging from emails to DNA stains, none of them, so far as is known, made photographic records of their deeds, as Senator Stanley may have. Another possibility, that a third party took the pictures in Stanley’s presence, is too kinky to imagine. There is, however, yet a third scenario, significantly more exculpatory — that Morrison herself, with the aid of a self-timer or a confederate (e.g., Watts) may have taken the pictures without Stanley’s cooperation or knowledge.

In any case, the senator — who was employed as an account manager with the now discredited Stanford Group (though not implicated or charged himself) — is up against it. “Judge not lest ye be judged” goes the Biblical injunction, but a public official unavoidably will be judged, at election time if not earlier.

What is remarkable, given the strain Stanley was under during this last session, is that, instead of hunkering down, he kept on taking prominent roles in controversial legislation — e.g., in sponsoring a bill, which ultimately and narrowly failed, that would have prohibited local political jurisdictions from passing “living wage” ordinances.

Technically, Stanley is the victim in this case, though he was more self-victimizer than not, and he did the right thing by calling in the TBI once things had progressed to that pass. Public officials involved in these circumstances have no choice if they intend to keep on pursuing their political careers: They must express contrition and must do so quickly and believably.

Even then, it is a judgment call by their families or constituents as to whether they are forgiven, and Paul Stanley’s lot is complicated by the existence of those blackmail photographs. Much of Stanley’s fate, personal and political, will be determined when it is discovered just how those pictures came into being.

"Another possibility, that a third party took the pictures in Stanley’s presence, is too kinky to imagine."

In all seriousness, that barely makes the kink list.

(In my best Jimmy Swaggert)"I have siiiinned" The hypocrisy of these born again wingnuts is damn amusing. Who woulda guessed that the Republican Poontanger of the Week award would be going to our own Paul Stanley? This is sweet.

I think Rep. Steve McManus would be the best choice to replace Paul Stanley. Its about time we get someone who knows what they're doing with a budget in the senate.

I want to see the pictures. JB, did anyone send them to you?

I have some pictures of that sort on myself, if they might make a tantalizing lead-in. Only, I wasn't married when they were taken (although the other subjects WERE...to each other). I still haven't been furnished the video, shot on Candlelight Vigil night; but I CAN remember what was on it.

What is interesting to me is why is it always the ones that espouse "family values" that keep getting in to these situations (Slick Willie excluded)? I am no saint by any means, but I don't go around trying to force my "values" on everyone else.

Merc - it's all part of the sickness of power. "Family values" is the uniform they wear to get elected. Christianity is their Burt Reynolds running bandit on their truckload of shenanigans. For every one that is exposed, there are dozens whose escapades never see the light of day. The daliances of Mark Sanford and Sen. Ensign (how could you leave him out, Jackson?) were known by their colleagues (not to mention the national press) well before they became public, but they actively worked to keep these matters out of the public eye.

Another Republican hypocrite bites the dust.
I'm sure the GOP is relieved (and surprised) that the college intern was a girl.

This happened in April. It's August. Has it just been buried in Nashville all this time?

That doesn't sound like expressing contrition quickly and believably. That sounds like he was fervently hoping it would never become public knowledge. Otherwise there would have been a presser after the arrest.

Was there any wind of this back in April?

Ol' Paul was just trying to work his way up to DC so he could live in "C" Street House (no pun intended) that fundie frat house, with Ensign, Sanford, and Chippy Pickering, cause he knew if you're living there, you get taxpayer provided poontang in the name of sweet Jeeezus 24/7.

So amax, are you saying the fact that Bill Clinton got caught with an intern means an automatic kitchen pass for any Republican to cheat on his/her spouse? Even though all the while they have the gall to proclaim loudly and publicly that they're pro-marriage and pro-family values and pro-legislating morality?

Even you must see the hypocrisy at work there.

Paul, dude! If your sweet thang's boyfriend has some photos of you and her doing the nasty, you are not the victim! I love how these neo-cons always try to play the victim. Hell, he was the victor--he got his poontang while telling everyone how pure and chaste he was in the name of 'family values'. These hypocrites should have their own reality show. Let's see....anyone got a good name for it??

I'm saying the hypocrisy is on the left. Bill Clinton doesn't need a pass, cheating on your wife is a badge of honor on the left.

@amax:

well that's a load o'bull.
there's plenty of hypocrisy to go around.

why does it always seem that the ones who make the most noise about how righteous they are, are also the ones who wind up making the biggest splash when they fall off their pedestals into the cesspool.

the kind of personality that engages in this type of behavior isn't a democrat or a republican. they belong to a party of one.

Tommyboy, rest assured that if it were ANY Democrat who had pulled this stunt, the faux X-tian neo-cons would have blown circuit breakers at right wing radio stations beating their gums so hard demanding impeachment and judging the guilty to hell, fire, and damnation. That's how these Pharisees work. So I won't stop talking about Stanley and his jam of hot mess because Republicans have stood up for years and claimed themselves to be superior morally to the rest of us.
They have beat the 'family values' drum since Ronnie Raygun welcomed Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson to the WH and opened the Fundie Pandora's box that created a voting block that STILL (still!) thinks the most urgent problems we face are keeping women from getting abortions and birth control, keeping gays from getting married, and making sure every man, woman, and child is packing heat anytime, anywhere. Excuse my schadenfreude, but these wingnuts dug their own holes. Let's see if they are willing to stop the hypocrisy and have some contrition and humility.

Posted by rantboy on July 22, 2009 at 4:15 PM | Report this comment

Can you really blame Clinton though? I mean look what he is married to. The thing about good ol' Bill was that his philandering was the worst kept secret in Arkansas and he wasn't trying to legislate morality. Basically you knew what you were getting.

I am sorry to say it, but the hypocrisy belongs to both sides. I for one don't believe there is much of a difference between either party once you reach that level. Some are just better at not getting caught than others.

But you do have to give the senator his props....22 years old! Rock on, bro!!!

Posted by mad_merc on July 22, 2009 at 4:16 PM | Report this comment

I wasn't clear in my earlier post. The hypocrisy seems to be with the political parties and most voters.
Also, IF, IF Paul Stanley has had this affair then he too is a hypocrite.
Here is the double standard, it's on the front of this website. Bill Clinton to speak to TN democrats.
Not only does the party still follow Bill, the voters have no condemnation.
Paul will almost assuredly be cast from the republican party as all of the ones caught in messes like this.
So to all the posters here, why are you so upset at Paul? He hasn't comitted any crime, cheating on your family doesn't matter (see the front of this website)
If "family values" don't mean anything to you, then you shouldn't care that he didn't uphold them.

Yeah, and after he took nakies, he got a little takie? Amax, dude, your response about no crime being committed is the standard Repuke line now and that's pretty funny. Oh sure it's no crime to commit adultery. But we're dealing with the slime that held themselves up to be the moral arbiters for the country when Clinton got his BJ. Stanley is in the party of rank hypocrisy and santimony, so it matters. Family values DO mean something. That's why it's such shit when these hypocrites claim they have family values and virtues sanctioned by God that the Democrats don't have-- and it turns out that they have feet of clay, just like the rest of us.

Amax the problem with this whole family values thing is that Stanley was one of the people responsible for attempting to dictate what his family values were (apparently) to the rest of the population. While there are some common threads like love and respect, the concept of family values are different for each family. Stanley willingly placed himself on a moral pedestal. He preached (attempted to legislate) that his way was the best way for the citizens of Tennessee. Support of a bill to effectively block cohabiting, unmarried couples (in political terms gay) from adopting; steadfastly opposed to a woman's right to an abortion; and against equal protection based on sexual orientation. What values are these? He wants all forms of abortion to be illegal, but then deny couples that may provide excellent homes the chance to adopt? These are the problems with Stanley and religious right. That is why there is such an uproar when something like this happens.

Who the hell is Steve McManus? Is he a "family values" dude like most of the Republicans here, or does he believe in staying the hell out of my personal life?

Well, I hope Stanley's buddies at Stanford Financial, where he worked, can help him foot any legal bills ---- oh yeah-- They're all under indictment. Nevermind.

“OK, Just for the sake of argument lets say there are photos of a Stanley affair and it was all true. (I have no knowledge of that one way or the other) Is that illegal? No. While unseemly, he has not broken any legal law. To his credit he went above what many would do and called the cops when being shaken down. I am sure he knew when he did, that it would come out and it would not be pretty. He stood up to the blackmailer and did the right thing anyway. A lesser person would have caved, given the money and hoped it never came out.” - Rep. Stacey Campfield

Unbelievable. He breaks his marriage vows and reveals himself as a breathtaking moral hypocrite, and Rep. Campfield is complimenting him on his behavior because he wouldn't allow himself to be blackmailed?

I expect that if Stanley robbed a bank, hid the cash for months and then surrendered when police surrounded his house, Campfield would praise him for not resisting arrest.

Posted by billp on July 24, 2009 at 9:20 AM | Report this comment

It gets better.Stanley met with a Planned Parenthood executive the day before the extortion attempt happened. He told the lady from Planned Parenthood that he would never support their efforts to stop STDs (Memphis is #1 in the nation) or help women get gynecological check-ups---that he was a man of great Christian faith who doesn't believe young people should be having premarital sex...
WTF???? But he's fine with middle age male politicians boinking their young female interns (who might end up needing PP assistance because they contracted gonorrhea or got pregnant.) This guy is nuts and is clearly a brazen hypocrite. He believes in "Do as I Say, Not As I Do---and when I'm caught doing what I said you can't do, then I didn't do what you said I did." Caspice?

Posted by rantboy on July 24, 2009 at 9:49 AM | Report this comment

In response to those who think Stanley is being held to a higher standard than others (like some Democrats) upon learning of his adultery, I suggest that he should be because of his moralistic statements and condemnations of others for failing to meet his moral standards.

Put another way, I would be more outraged if the President of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) was arrested for DUI than if it was someone else. You expect someone crusading against drunk driving to be more careful themselves about doing it.

If you cannot live up to what you are preaching...please resign...for the good of all concerned.

Stanley, you just must not be too bright. How long did you expect to get away with this? You aren't "special"........the rules apply to you, too.

I'm a Republican and I'm disgusted with this nonsense. I feel sad for his children.

Man, this story is so juicy and it just keeps on giving. Today, we learn Paul's sweet thang was actually married and her hubby is serving prison time in FL. Also, it is being reported that 'ol Paul had been married before and wifey #1 is on record saying she divorced him because he was abusive. His present wife was his (can you guess?) intern when he was married to the first wife. I guess all this happened before he found Jesus and accepted him as his personal Lord and Savior so he could run as a family values conservative Republican. What lid is going to blow next for this a-hole?

Regular government employees are supposed to be held to a higher standard, particularly those in positions of trust. The organization's policies or contract often has a "behavior unbecoming" clause. I have seen government employees having "behavior unbecoming" used against them for things like; a 3rd party takes a picture at a Halloween party and it is posted to 3rd party's MySpace, public intoxication charges and being gay--just examples of things regular government employees have had to defend themselves and jobs over. Just ask anyone you know that works at a 911 call center, jail or police department. Also, a Board of Directors can have a prominent employee removed because of comments and /or behavior that may reflect negatively on that organization (ie university, hospital).

All that said, many of the politicians feel they are above the law. Look at recent Knox County politics--P Card spending, extravagant travel, the unethical law director! OK, Ragsdale was "cleared" but whatever. These egomaniacal jerks charm their ways into office, whatever the cost. They may work on laws or jump on soap boxes counter to the way they behave because they are so far from that, so above the law (in their narcissistic minds) that it doesn't really matter to them.

Yes, politicians are human and humans make mistakes, give into temptation, use poor judgement. The ones who use "family values" and morality issues to get into office should be held to those same principals. If caught doing the wrong thing, they should be ousted for "behavior unbecoming."

Orlando Sentinel is reporting on Ms. Morrison today. She is a convicted criminal. They posted her mug shot. At age 18, Morrison was busted on cocaine charges, and admitted to being addicted to crack cocaine. Also, she married a man who beat a 75 year old with a hammer while Morrison watched. Paul Stanley was committing adultery with a convicted criminal. While he was railing against pre-marital sex, abortion, and gay marriage, and reminding his constituents of how virtuous he was with all his false piety, he was doing the nasty with a criminal. The guy still hasn't resigned. That takes balls. No pun intended.

Democrats who have affairs with interns are lying, immoral adulterers who are exposed for what they are. Republicans who do so are good, decent God-fearing people who simply made a mistake that should not overshadow their honorable character and strong moral convictions.
