Hattiloo in the Park

Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail can keep the ambitious Hattiloo Theatre from performing its epic children’s show in Memphis parks throughout the months of September and October. Well, actually all of those things can stop the Hattiloo from performing its epic children’s show, but so far, according to the theater’s founding director Ekundayo Bandele, Memphis’ unrelenting streak of wet weather has only resulted in a single cancellation. “We only cancel the show if rain is really coming down,” he says.

“Hattiloo in the Park” is a three-hour montage of several plays, ranging from the gospel musical Mahalia to August Wilson’s drama Fences.

“We also do scenes from Shakespeare plays,” Bandele says. “We do scenes from Don’t Bother Me I Can’t Cope and The Color Purple. We have hip-hop dance performances, ballet performances, and classical violin performances, as well as spoken-word performances by a group called Inner City South. — Chris Davis
