I have two concerns. One is with the bond deal, and the other is with the Sewer Department itself. I pose to the readers a question worth considering: Is this bond deal going to be another one like the MLGW bond deal that Mayor Herenton tried to high-jack by getting his cronies in on the deal and then letting them get away with only selling 10% of what they promised to sell while still collecting their commission?
And as for me personally, why after years of flushing my money down the sewer would I want to invest in it? For what little work they have done over the years, there should be plenty of money in the kitty to make any needed repairs. For years, whenever water was seen in the street, it would be assumed it was a water leak. When MLGW's Water Department would discover it was a sewer leak, they would turn the problem over to the Sewer Department. Then someone with the Sewer Department would come out and say, "Oh, that's water, and they would give it back to MGLW." Many times, the Water Department would even dig out the hole only to prove the leak was sewer and give it back to the Sewer Department. Finally, after having been proven it was a sewer leak, Sewer & Drain would fix it...then they would call MLGW back and tell them to fill in the hole. ??? I guess the sewer department's finances look good, because they don't do anything without trying to pawn it off on someone else first and let someone else foot the bill and do the work.
I must agree with Gadfly. Jerry Collins only has 6 months utility experience at best. What I see is another moving of a crony at city hall into a more lucrative position at MLGW from which Mr. Collins will walk away with a pension and a big benefits package. While the scuttlebutt about the Lee pension is that he is only carrying away what he put in, the truth of the matter is that after 3 years work, Lee walked away with the same benefits package that a 25-year company veteran walks away with. That's not right, and we all know it. Jerry Collins will be just like Lee who walked away from the company with my money. Yes. My money. I'm a retiree's spouse. Furthermore, I can only hope that he runs MLGW more effeciently than he has the sewer system. MLGW has always raised their utility connections in the streets when they were scheduled for paving. Why hasn't the Sewer Department? (Sewer grates) Why did Collins come in like a 'white knight on a steed' and say it wasn't his responsiblity but he was going to fix it? (I'm referring to Poplar Ave, et al.) Why did it take the Sewer Department 5 or 6 years to figure out that the sewer connections in my yard and a neighbor's weren't tied-in to the street conncections correctly or weren't tied-in at all? --And really, they weren't the ones who figured it out... an MLGW Water Distribution employee figured it out.-- All I can say is "GOOD RIDDANCE" to the out-going council members who have stuck it to us one last time!
Oh, Branston. You need to check your figures. Willie Herenton only got less that 5% of the 65,000 or so white votes cast, which come to less than 3,000 white votes. Willie still has virtually no support n the white community.
And when is he going to start helping me? Why should I start helping him? For years he has tried every way to get his hands in MLGW's deep pockets.... MLGW, my bread & butter. He has already forced a combination of city & MLGW health benefits, resulting in: poorer management, less in-network doctors, and more stress than any of us care to talk about. He put his little buddy Joseph Lee into MLGW who gave a way the controlling interest in Networx to private investors, and he bought gas caves in Kentucky and then charged the customers in advance for the cost of the gas to fill the caves. His little buddy also pre-bought gas at such an exhorbitant rate that we will be paying these high utility bills for a long, long time to come.
I'm with the other guy. what does Willie want us to do? help him spend our money on more of his stupid schemes.... like building a football stadium that will only host 12 events per year? Where's the logic in that? Or I should say, who's lining his pockets to do that?
Morris wasn't a spoiler. He just got in the race too late. Had he been running for the last 3 1/2 yeas as Ms. Chumney, he would have done much better. Not a bad showing at all for someone who is a virtual unknown candidate to the average citizen of Memphis.
It's too bad that those who voted for Chumney didn't know that while she has been running for mayor the whole time she was sitting on the council that she wasn't doing her job representing the constituents. She held her coffees and made sure she got a few pot holes & street lights fixed, but she didn't keep abreast of the more costly things she was supposed to be overseeing. She still doesn't have a clue what Networx was all about & she should have been watching that for the last 3 1/2 years as a member of the council's MGLW oversight committee. If she was as opposed the mayor's appointment of Joseph Lee as she proclaimed, she should have been watching him and she wasn't. While she was out shaking hands and hosting coffee klatches the foxes spoiled the hen house.
Furthermore, if Chumney had actually read the investigative report commissioned by the city council, she would have known that it was Joseph Lee who was the fox that Willie put in charge of the hen house. But she's a politician. Maybe she did know, but purposely attributed Joseph Lee's antics to her opponent Morris to muddy the waters enough to attempt to win an election.
You are sugessting that the bill be sent to the wrong place. Pick one of these or make them share the responsibility: Joseph Lee & the private investors. Joseph Lee traded off the controlling interest in the company for a "promise to pay". That means that the investors agreed to pay Networx bills in the event that it couldn't pay its bills. Absolutely no money changed hands for this deal. They just gained more stock absolutely scott free. Maybe if Joseph Lee had to pay this bill, it would cover what MLGW is having to pay for his legal fees.
Willie, don't hold your breath waiting for Ford to do anything in the next two days.
Carol, you need to stop betting on that so-called "new poll" that was really two weeks old. Channel 13 have been sitting on those OLD results from Rasmussen for 2 weeks.
Carol & Willie, Be afraid. Be very afraid. The Morris momentum has flow right past you.
