OtherArea: Memphis, TN
I saw Wild Flag in Little Rock last week, and Carrie Brownstein was kicking just as high as she ever did in the 90's. It ain't like she's a grandma, Chris.
The fact that MPLIC has an unqualified, overpaid library director does not mean that the hundreds of librarians and staff who work there (many for years before she was ever "appointed") do not do good work. Thankfully, they have continued providing quality service to the people of Memphis despite having McCloy as their director.
What a lazy piece of writing. I do not work for LINC or the Memphis Public Library, but I know about the work that they do, and it's sad that the author didn't make any discernible effort to get some updated information on LINC. LINC still gets heavy business doing a variety of things. First, they answer hundreds of quick reference questions each week, mainly for people who DO have access to the internet but don't know how to effectively search online. There is also the well-known fact that not everything is even available on the internet. Secondly, LINC serves as the main switchboard of the library, routing calls to appropriate departments and branches for more in-depth answers to reference questions or other library services. Third, LINC is a constantly updated source for community and social service information. Read more about it here: http://www.memphislibrary.org/linc/211.htm.
The author's statement that Trousseau II (the new Trousseau location in East Memphis) was closed is incorrect. I guess you haven't seen any of their TV commercials recently?
Also, apparently the author didn't hear about the work being done on Chicago Pizza Factory last summer: http://fertilegroundzine.blogspot.com/2008/06/for-rent.html. Still not rented, but not exactly the time warp he described.
"Most city divisions are run by people with experience in public management. Ideally, we would have one person with both city and library experience."
Yes, that sounds ideal. So why not open up the position to applicants who have minimal credentials?
Yeah Clint, there's even a photo of McCloy peeking through some book stacks. Way to go!
Anyone know when the Zoroaster show is Sunday night?
