My former boyfriend, a die-hard Canadian "momma's boy," always swore that his mother's traditional Vinegar Soup was the best thing EVER. After a few months of his bragging, I convinced him to call dear mom and get her recipe. He slaved over the stove all day, boiling potatoes, pouring vinegar, slicing onions...pouring more vinegar...pouring MORE vinegar... into a huge pot, with no success in making it taste like anything other than, well, vinegar. After a couple more calls home to mom, and more attempts at adding pepper, potatoes, etc...we had a great big pot full of sticky, slimy, vinegar mush. I tried to down a few bites, but even my vinegar soup-lovin' boyfriend couldn't stomach the concoction, so we decided to dump it out. We were even wise enough to let it cool a little before attempting to hoist the kettle-o-krud over a full-sized trash bag in the middle of the kitchen floor. We opened the kitchen door to make for a hasty escape to the trash bin with the smelly mess and proceeded to dump. Just as the clump came unstuck from the bottom of the pot, someone (I won't point any fingers) shook said pot to speed things along. Speed along it did...landing on one edge of the trash bag, yanking the bag out of my hands, splatting all over the floor, my feet, hair, clothes, small son, cabinets, furniture...and our grand finale had been witnessed by our newly-moved-to-America Chinese neighbor, who passed the door just in time to shout out, "Oh my! Your kitchen dirty!! Very, very dirty!!"
Steve is also at the Farmers' Market at Memphis Botanic Garden every Wednesday, 2-6 p.m. We're glad to have him with us!!
