Oh yeah. One more thing.
I hate the Titans.
Memphis has been trying to get an NFL team since the 70's. Fred Smith's attempt in the 90's was merely the latest attempt. Nashville tried ONCE and got it.
I'm actually kind of emberassed that you mentioned Memphis in this letter at all. I feel like you've implicated the rest of us for a letter that's somewhat condescending.
When I first started reading this letter, I kinda had the assumption that you were going to gracefully argue that Memphis deserves an NFL team. I was wrong, I guess. What I'm left wondering is : what was the point of this, Mr. Murtaugh? Only one of your arguments had ANY validity and another one was merely conceivable at best. The rest of your points were...well, kind of pointless.
Eliminating the three point stance? I could see that. However, I think the nature of the game promotes head injury and eliminating the stance won't really effect the overall health of players. A lot of players don't use the three point anyway.
Reducing the number of divisions? I'd be alright with that. Two divisions per Conference. But then everybody would be a Wild Card :P
Eliminating the exhibition games because star players don't play? That's kind of stupid. The whole point of the preseason games is to evaluate backups and give rookies a chance to get some game time (and maybe even break through to being stars themselves).
Reducing the preseason to 2 games per team? Yeah, I'd like to see that. But I don't think the regular season should be extended to 18 games. That's kind of non-sensical, Mr. Murtaugh.
Furthermore, why should Brett Favre play in ALL FOUR preseason games? What's your basis for that? And how is it Goodall's decision, anyway? The man constantly plays hurt and yet he's still proficient. Give 'em a break.
Moving the Colts back to Baltimore? I don't see your logic. Franchise moves are something that just occur (and have always occured) in professional sports. Why not move the Oakland Raiders back to LA? Or the New Orleans Hornets back to Charlotte? How about putting the Memphis Grizzlies back in Vancouver?
Besides, that's something that the ownership groups of both the Ravens AND the Colts would have to agree to. Neither city would be particularly fond of this move and, furthermore, Roger Goodall doesn't have the authority to FORCE a franchise to move (though the NFL can block a move, as far as I know). I really (really) don't see your point. And besides, if Roger Goodall FORCED the Colts to relocate BACK to Baltimore, you really think that would help his chances to be elected to the Hall [as you had written]? Come on, Mr. Murtaugh. That's foolish.
You sounded less like an informed sports writer for a respected local publication and more like an armchair QB blowing some steam. Maybe that's why the Memphis Flyer doesn't have a sports section in PRINT.
Herenton has illustrated throughout the entire campaign process that he has an outlandishly vague understanding of how the American democracy works. His assertions that African Americans are not properly represented in the 9th District are ...ridiculous at best; Cohen won over 75% of the votes in a district that is 65% 'minority'.
NOW Herenton has shown us that he doesn't understand statistics either. It's easy to produce skewed results when you conduct your own poll.
I just find it odd (almost laughable) that Herenton has this misplaced sense of "racial injustice". Racism is a real and serious problem, not just in Memphis but in all the world. However, he seems to invent bigotry that, quite simply, isn't there. That, in and of itself, is actually doing more harm than good.
The fact of the matter is that the 9th District is majority black. And yet, Steve Cohen defeated Jake Ford in 2006 and Nikki Tinker in 2008 (despite Nikki's ferociously racist campaign tactics). This pretty much renders Herenton's point to be null and void...because Cohen won in a landslide both times over black candidates in a black district. Apparently, black voters aren't as shallow and superficial as Nikki Tinker and Willie Herenton want them to be.
Herenton does nothing but INCREASE the racial tension in this town. It's disgusting.
" he used all of our criticisms and critiques as a free editing service to correct his campaign flier before printing and distributing it"
well...you would *think* that as the former head of Memphis City Schools, he ought to be articulate enough to edit his own campaign material. Gee. I wonder from where Memphis' educational woes were spawned?
