Congressman Steve Cohen authored several pieces of transportation legislation that have the potential to positively impact our city. Recently, he introduced the Aerotropolis Act of 2010, which creates the opportunity for Memphis to receive significant funding for the development of the Memphis Aerotropolis. He also introduced the Enhancing Livability for All Americans Act, which creates an Office of Livability within the Department of Transportation. If passed, this office will manage a discretionary grant program that will provide grants to communities like Memphis to implement projects that enhance livability. Recognizing the critical role transportation plays in our city's current and future prosperity, Congressman Steve Cohen chose to serve on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. As a committee member, Congressman Cohen exercised oversight on important issues like the Gulf Oil Spill and the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, which is responsible for putting thousands of Americans back to work and improving our nation's aging Infrastructure. The Recovery Act has brought nearly $400 million back to Memphis -- $60 million of which went to transportation projects. This funding was used to buy 35 new MATA buses, upgrade airport facilities, repair dozens of roads, maintain our port, and much more.
Additionally, Congressman Cohen helped secure $66 million in transportation funding over the last two years, which has gone to improve all aspects of our infrastructure.
