Re: “AFSCME Endorsement Question Remains Open

Very good point, LWC.

That's where the money went. Political contributions have to be approved by local union leadership.

Re: “New Plans Ease Sting of City Benefits Cuts

Folks, what this all boils down to is: "Who is going to pay for retirees healthcare expenses?"

Will it be the taxpayers in the highest taxed, and poorest, big city in this state or will it be the retirees?

I believe City employees pay the Medicare portion of the Social Security tax, so they are eligible for Medicare. They should be signing up for medicare and, if they want, should get a supplemental policy.

You forget the Scandinavian countries are all clustered at the top of the pile too.

Re: “The Dumbing of America

The United States asks too much from students at the bottom of the intellectual pile, asks the wrong things from those in the middle, and asks too little from those at the top of the intellectual pile.

We deploy our education assets very, very inefficiently, ... spending way too much on the lowest performers while largely ignoring the students with the greatest potential.

This is why US students have fallen way behind their counterparts in academic expertise and performance. We used to be at, or near, the top of the rankings on academic performance. Not any longer.

The impact of this lousy approach to education is just beginning to be seen in our international economic performance. Stay tuned, ...

Re: “Letter From the Editor

You're off your rocker, OTP!

I've never seen the show, but was quite delighted to see A&E and Cracker Barrel back off their initial kneejerk PC reaction to anyone who makes a comment which one of our protected species may not like.

I say ... grow up and behave like responsible adults. The old "sticks & stones" mantra is still applicable.

Re: “Germantown Pitches to Retain All Its Schools, but the School Board Says No

The State just needs to see to it that the schools within the muni boundaries get transferred to the munis along with any outstanding liabilities attached to them. They've already paid their fair share for school buildings thru their taxes, thru the years.

The "out of district" students should be "grandfathered" in the schools until they graduate. Any new students should come from within the district, plus an agreed to unincorporated area.

I have spoken, ... this makes perfect sense. Now, Memphis, pick up your marbles, go home and mind your own business. What goes on in the munis is not your concern.
