Earlier this month, after nearly 30 years in Midtown, the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County opened its new multilevel facility at 935 Farm Road near Shelby Farms.
Built at a cost of $5.6 million on four acres leased by the county for $1 a year, the organizationยs 3,000-square-foot headquarters can accommodate more than twice as many animals than the old cluster of buildings on Central.
The new shelter also contains a veterinary clinic and space for adoption counseling, grooming, acupuncture, obedience training, volunteer training, humane education, community meetings, and more.
Among its animal-friendly features are heated floors, big windows that let in lots of light, piped-in easy-listening music that calms the critters, and a state-of-the-art ventilation system that helps prevent the spread of disease.
Since the new headquarters opened March 3rd, the Humane Society has adopted out 20 dogs and 15 cats, taken in 30 new animals, and geeeted 536 human visitors. Says president Ginger Morgan: ย[Those are] much better numbers than at the old building.ย
