Former Memphis-Shelby County Schools superintendent Marie Feagins, who, as the Memphis Flyer first noted, has been considering a run for County Mayor, has apparently decided to take the plunge.

Or so says one JR Robinson Wednesday in the blog JustMyMemphis.

Feagins, โ€œhas officially announced her campaign for Shelby County Mayor,โ€ says Robinson, who goes on to note that Feaginsโ€™ candidacy โ€œcomes after a turbulent tenure at Memphis-Shelby County Schools, where she was both celebrated as a visionary reformer and criticized amid political infighting and her eventual dismissal.โ€

Unnoticed until now, Feagins filed an intent to run with the Election Commission on October 31, naming Telise Ezell-Turner as her treasurer.  Speculation about Feaginsโ€™ intentions had been brewing for weeks. And her entrance into the campaign is sure to influence the campaign plans of others already running.

Announced candidates include City Council member JB Smiley, Jr., Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery, Assessor Melvin Burgess Jr., Criminal Court Clerk Heidi Kuhn, county Chief Administrative Officer Harold Collins, and LegalShield manager Rusty Qualls.
