The National Journal‘s “House Race Hotline” excerpted a Commercial Appeal article chiding house minority leader-elect Nancy Pelosi for bragging that her leadership team (consisting of a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple — no that was James Watt in 1983 — we mean a woman, two white males, one Hispanic, and one African American) is physically representative of the American landscape. The CA article claimed the contrary and on the solid grounds that Pelosiยšs team, averaging 59 years of age, was just too dang old and out of it to rouse the enthusiasm of a college crowd, or (excepting feminists celebrating Pelosiยšs obvious grrl power) anyone really. “Star power, or potential star power, is what [defeated Memphisยš Rep. Harold] Ford [Jr.] offered.” Indeed, while Pelosi may have the kind of strong record, and experience we typically look for in a leader, we haven’t seen her on The Daily Show, now have we?
