Memphis will now be the home of Claude, the artificial intelligence from San-Francisco-based Anthropic.

The company will take over all of the servers at Elon Musk’s xAI Colossus 1 facility in South Memphis. Anthropic plans to use the additional compute to directly improve capacity for Claude Pro and Claude Max subscribers.

”The company describes itself as a Public Benefit Corporation with a single purpose: the responsible development of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity, with accountability to the public good embedded in its corporate DNA,” Memphis Mayor Paul Young said in a statement posted to X late Wednesday.

”They built their tech with guardrails that the world can learn from. And now they’ve chosen Memphis to grow their capacity.

“What excites me is a conversation I had with Anthropic’s team, where they expressed genuine interest in becoming a great neighbor in Memphis, not just a tenant.

“Memphis is ready for strong partners who will invest meaningful resources, and Anthropic has signaled that they want to be exactly that.”

As part of the agreement between SpaceX and Anthropic, the companies may partner to develop multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity.

”The compute required to train and operate the next generation of these systems is outpacing what terrestrial power, land, and cooling can deliver on the timelines that matter,” SpaceX said in a statement.
