Charles “Wigg” Walker at Hi-Tone

The Night Train from Nashville pulls into the Hi-Tone Café for a nonstop dance party this Friday night, when ‘60s Southern soul star Charles “Wigg” Walker and his newly formed, nine-man funk outfit the Dynamites transform the club into a stop on the chitlin’ circuit. Walker — an unsung musical hero if there ever was one — made his name waxing sides for the Chess and Champion labels; today, he’s dazzling younger generations with his superlative showmanship and perfect pipes while most of his cohorts are enjoying a quiet retirement. Listen for cult classics like “No Fool No More” and brand-new tracks like “Slinky” and “Come On In.” Setting the mood: Memphix DJ Chase One, Buck Wilders, the Hook-Up, and Nashville DJ D-Funk. Fans of the Bo-Keys, William Bell, or Sharon Jones, this show is for you. A paltry $5 will get you into the party, which starts at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 2nd.

Capital Punishment Reading John Branston’s column (City Beat, May 18th issue) supporting capital punishment is like hearing one side of a good debate. One listens to the arguments and starts to be convinced that there is only one logical conclusion. Then, the other side presents the countervailing facts, and one becomes aware of the lack […]

Dream Town, U.S.A.

Memphis may well receive a stampede of retiring Baby-boomers after making AARP magazine’s short list of dream towns. An article in this month’s issue describes the Bluff City as a “revitalized cultural mecca.” Of course, being ground zero for two of the hottest movies of 2005 — Walk the Line, Hustle & Flow — certainly adds to the city’s buzz. According to the article, lifestyle perks such as Memphis’ small town charm, abundance of parks, and affordable housing — real-estate experts cite Memphis as “One of the best values in the country” — are among selling points that appeal to empty nesters. Pearl Jam Pearl Jam (J) Don’t call it a comeback: Eddie Vedder’s Whitmanesque humanism trumps political complaint as his band churns out dud-free filler. With their newest album, grunge-rock survivors Pearl Jam have garnered some of their best notices in years. Critics have hailed the album as “their best in 10 [years]” (Rolling Stone) and […]

Gasonomics Herbert Kook’s letter criticizing my “Gasonomics 101” Viewpoint (May 18th issue) is based on its own faulty premise: namely, that the economic model of supply and demand operates normally in the oil market (as it does in the agricultural commodity market he cites to support his critique). In addition to exorbitantly escalating the price […]

Warn the President. The Dixie Chicks Are Coming!

After filling The Pyramid twice in the past five years, the Dixie Chicks will debut at FedExForum this September as part of their “Accidents & Accusations” tour. The Chicks’ just-announced Memphis date is Wednesday, September 27th. Since the Chicks last packed Memphis concert came well after the band drew ire for attacking the President from a London stage, controversy shouldn’t hurt the band much here.

For more info on the Chicks upcoming tour, go here. To read the Flyer’s take on the group’s new album, Taking the Long Way, which hits store racks tomorrow, go here.
