West Memphis Three Movie

Variety reported last week that Dimension films has purchased the rights to Mara Leveritt’s book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, which covered the murder of three young boys and the controversial conviction of three teens in West Memphis in the early 90s. The film will be directed by Scott Derrickson and and written by Paul Harris Boardman, who worked together on The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Read the story here.

On Sunday, former Misfit member Michale Graves will stop by the Complex for the Almost Home Tour concert in support of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley Jr., and Jason Baldwin, the men convicted of the murders who are also known as the West Memphis Three. Read the story.

Stomped The Ponderosa Stomp (Music, May 11th issue) was the most memorable music event of my life. The festival honors the unsung heroes of the blues, soul, rockabilly, swamp pop, and New Orleans rhythm and blues while they are still alive. More than 80 acts were densely packed into three nights on three stages at the Gibson Guitar Factory. William Bell, […]

Taking the Long Way Dixie Chicks (Columbia) The Dixie Chicks come back dark and defiant. Attacking the president of the United States from a London stage three years ago was not a heroic act. B&Q, a Home Depot-like chain in the UK and Europe, is offering the Memphis Retro Style 2 Burner Gas Barbecue. Looks like it’s currently out of stock. But that may be a good thing: Someone dragging one of these precious little grills (comes in pink, blue, red, and cream) down to the Barbecue Cooking Contest is likely to get pelted with ribs. For more information, go to the B&Q site here.

You think Memphis In May is the only thing happening in Memphis in May? As rhetoricians might say, “Bitch, please.”

Really, they might, and you can ask them during the Rhetoric Society of America 2006 conference being held in Memphis May 26th-May 29th. Topics include: “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word to Say: Official Apology and Rhetorical Agency in Contemporary Danish Politics,” “Reintroducing the Body into Ethos Formation and Expression,” “Late 19th Century Southern Suffrage Rhetoric and the Tangled Intersections of Racial and Gendered Politics,” and much, much more. Leaning Left? It’s no secret that the Flyer is a left-leaning publication, which is fine and dandy with me. I am a conservative and I still pick up a copy every week — not to see what’s happening on the other side of the political opinion spectrum, but because I love Memphis and care about […]

A Blessing and a Curse The Drive-By Truckers (New West) Three-guitar attack strips boogie and blues from the Skynyrd blueprint. The title of the Drive-By Truckers’ sixth studio album might refer to the band’s bulging lineup. A longtime partnership of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, the Drive-By Truckers are probably still best known for 2001’s […]
