Church Shares Mall Plan

Last February, Scott Kim had to shutter his women’s clothing store after the Hickory Ridge Mall was damaged in a tornado.

Today, he was back at the mall — in his store’s old space — to hear what the mall’s new owners, the World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church, are planning.

“People keep saying to us, you’re a church, what are you going to do with a mall?” says Al Cousins of the World Overcomers. “We want to talk to those retailers who are returning, those who are on the fence, and those who weren’t here in the first place and tell them, here’s our plan.”

Web-Based Film Series On the Edge of Happiness Debuts Tonight

Craig Brewer’s $5 Cover rolls out next month, but Brewer isn’t the only local filmmaker with a serialized Web project on tap. Writer/director Mark Jones (Eli Parker Is Getting Married?, Fraternity Massacre on Hell Island) and his frequent collaborator, Ryan Parker, will launch On the Edge of Happiness tonight. The film is a five-part online soap opera, modeled partly on the murder mystery/cliffhanger plotting of Dallas’ famous “Who Shot J.R.?” storyline. Check it out at EdgeofSoapOpera.com

Food News: Look Who’s 3

At the three-year anniversary party for Valenza Pasta, Steve Barzizza was exuberant. While others at the Midtown grocery sipped Cabernet and filled their plates with ravioli, meatballs, and Italian cheeses, Barzizza shopped with glee, spending $100 before the evening was over.

Herrington and Akers on the Oscars (Part 2)

Flyer film writers Chris Herrington and Greg Akers continue their discussion about this year’s Oscar nominations in advance of Sunday’s show. In the first installment, Chris was overwhelmed by Greg’s rigorous preparation, but both agreed that Slumdog Millionaire, while likely to win Best Picture, is not all that.

The Oscars telecast is Sunday night and, in anticipation, Flyer film writers Chris Herrington and Greg Akers have been having an ongoing e-mail conversation about who they think will and should win the big categories.

Akers, who, last year, was one of only two people to get a perfect score in the Commercial Appeal‘s “Beat Beifuss” Oscar contest, is a legendary Academy Awards prognosticator. Fairgrounds Project at a Stand-Still

Mayor Willie Herenton attended the City Council’s Economic Development committee meeting this morning to address members’ concerns about the proposed fairgrounds redevelopment project.

By the end, however, he said, “Based on what I’m hearing publicly, we are no where … near to doing this project.”

Herenton Responds to School Suit Ruling

Today Chancellor Kenny Armstrong ruled in favor of the Memphis City Schools in the city/MCS lawsuit.

“One of my expectations was the court would really define what governmental body had the responsibility for maintenance of effort,” Herenton said. “I’m not a lawyer but I don’t think that designation has been made.
