Gussied Up will open October 24th.
The new nighttime bar/restaurant is the other half of Hard Times Deli, a sandwich shop at 655 Marshall Avenue in the Edge District. The two establishments, both owned by Harrison Downing, Cole Jeanes, and Schuyler O’Brien, are in the same building. They’ll share the same kitchen, but will be open at different hours.
“It’s one entity,” Downing says, “Gussied Up is the nighttime alter ego of Hard Times Deli. It’s the same restaurant. Just one is lunch and one is dinner.”
Hard Times Deli is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Gussied Up will be open from 5 until 11 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
Downing refers to Gussied Up as an “elevated neighborhood bar” that will serve, as Jeanes says, “more refined bar food.”
“Our take on classic bar food,” Downing says. Items include cheeseburgers, Hawaiian chicken sandwich, corndogs with Home Place Pastures hot dogs, sausage cheese plate, and a bowl of gummy bears, smoked beer nuts, and sour cream and Funyuns.
“We want you with a group of four people to order an entree and appetizer,” Downing says.
That grouping all at the same time might include a shrimp cocktail, a cold beer, and, yes, gummy bears. “We want you to look down the table and say, ‘What the fuck is this?’ And it all kind of works together.”
Cocktails — created by bar/general manager Max Braverman — are geared toward what people in the restaurant industry tend to favor.
The flooring tile is black, blue, and white, like at Hard Times Deli.
Collums Construction did the build-out of Gussied Up. It includes a wraparound bar with booth seats in the middle. Old, wavy glass blocks are used to separate the booths.
Pizza Hut-inspired chandeliers designed by Hannah Reasons of Goodreasonsglass hang over the booths.
Patrick Brown from cnct. Design did the interior design. Red is the primary decor color, including red neon lights, and chairs with tufted lipstick-red leather.
Ceiling neon lights and neon beer signs will be turned on when it gets dark.
