2006 JUDICIAL QUALIFICATION POLL
The Memphis Bar Association released the results of its Judicial Qualification Poll on Friday, July 14, 2006, for the candidates in contested judicial elections on the August 3 ballot.
The poll was sent to 3,025 attorneys in Memphis and Shelby County, including both members and non-members of the MBA. 400 attorneys responded.
The poll asked attorneys to rate a judicial candidateยs qualification for office after considering the candidateยs legal knowledge, experience, and area(s) of practice; reputation for competence in the area(s) of practice and/or judicial service; respect for the judicial process, including litigants, lawyers and judges; integrity; and life experiences and service to the legal and local communities. Attorneys were asked to rate a candidate as either ยhighly qualified,ย ยqualified,ย or ยnot qualifiedย. If more than one candidate was rated as ยhighly qualified,ย the attorney was asked to select the one candidate he/she felt was best qualified for the position. If an attorney did not know or had no opinion about a candidateยs qualifications, he/she was asked to mark ยno opinion.ย
The Memphis Bar Association has conducted a poll of candidates in contested judicial elections for more than 15 years, in the belief that Shelby County attorneys are in the best position to know a candidateยs qualifications and that the bar association has a responsibility to inform the voting public of attorneysย opinions about the candidates.
