Memphis Zoo asked fans to vote on a new logo to replace its existing logo, which has been in use for more than 30 years.Â
The online poll asks fans to choose among four logos. Two of them are updates of the zoo’s current logo, featuring the iconic Egyptian temple entrance. The other two feature a bear and an elephant.Â

The move comes as the zoo plans “an exciting new chapter, with new exhibits and experiences on the horizon.” This will include a transformation of the Africa section of the zoo, with a new home for its elephants and improved habitats for the animals of the African Veldt.Â
“While our current logo has served us well, there are opportunities to simplify and strengthen the design, while ensuring it continues to represent Memphis Zoo for decades to come,” said zoo communications specialist Jessica Amacker in a video on its website.
Allen Peters, an online creator and partner at Peters Design Co., said he caught the zoo’s attention online in a video in which he recreated the famous Gatorade logo.
“Memphis Zoo commented on it, ‘We dare you to do us next,” Peters said in a LinkedIn video. “Did you know that designing a zoo’s brand identity is on my bucket list? It’s one of my dream projects. Well, that comment turned into a new business meeting, which turned into a real project. Right now we just went through the entire process.”Â
He said that process whittled down 15 design ideas into the four submitted to the public Monday.
“Keep in mind, you’re not choosing a final logo,” the zoo’s Amacker said in the video. “You’re helping us decide on a direction.
“The winning concept will continue through the design process, where colors, font, and the complete brand identity will come together. Voting opens August 31st and closes September 14th.”
