Mud Island is submerged under the Mississippi River during the flood of 2011.
Upstream flooding of the Mississippi River is not projected to cause local damage this season, according to the Shelby County Office of Preparedness.ย
The river, currently at 28 feet, is set to crest at 36 feet on May 11, based on predictions made in a meeting yesterday, May 4, by the Office of Preparedness and officials from local fire and law enforcement, as well as, emergency agencies.
“Based on that prediction, we donโt anticipate damage,” said Dale Lane, director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness. “Still
those living near the Mississippi River, Loosahatchie River, Nonconnah Creek, Big Creek, and Cypress Creek need to stay informed.โย
In previous years, including 2011 when the river crested at just over 48 feet, flood damage led to impassable roads and damaged homes and businesses in North Memphis, Frayser, Presidentโs Island, Westwood, and Millington.
โWeโll be ready to respond should flooding occur and coordinate our efforts with the Shelby County Office of Preparedness,โ said Lieutenant Rick Keith, manager of the Memphis Office of Emergency Management.
